ABOUT LARRY
Larry Kunkel is a Canadian singer/songwriter who calls Winnipeg, Manitoba home. He was born into a
family where music was appreciated and music-making was encouraged to be pursued. Although Larry’s
formal musical training was in the accordion (useful in playing polka tunes in the family band), his talent
for the guitar and singing was undeniable. At an early age, learning some simple guitar chords from his
father, he soon would master and perfect complicated guitar pieces learnt almost solely by ear and then
composing his own melodies and lyrics. The passion for making his own music was sparked.

All the while finding time and ways to make his own music, Larry honed his live performance skills playing weekends for weddings, socials and dances in cover bands alongside his dad, brother and uncle. As a young man fresh out of high school recording his own original work at Maddock Studios, Larry was ‘discovered’ and invited to join already established band The D-Drifters. Larry toured and recorded with the band for 2 years before going on an extended hiatus.
Career and working life would dominate Larry’s weeks while weekends were filled with performing with the cover band Midstream for social functions all over Manitoba. Music continued to play an important part of life.
Marriage and children would soon follow and while juggling the demands of family, career, church life and playing in the band on the weekends, new kinds of melodies and lyrics were beginning to find their way to Larry’s heart and mind. The music, although always important, became secondary to Larry’s maturing love for Jesus and his passion to share Christ’s message of grace and mercy. The songs flowed from Larry’s heart, pen and guitar strings and in 2000, they became a recording entitled “Good News”.
Over the next years, more songs flowed from the experiences of life and maturing faith. Inspirations from the Holy Spirit and from the stories of friends and family, an album’s worth. An album that would wait for years to be made.
Returning to DACAPO Studios where the “Good News” album was recorded, friend and producer Nolan Balzer is bringing these songs to life with the help of some amazing musicians, near and far who are graciously lending their considerable talents to the project. “Lost & Found” is set for release in 2020.
